History of the Vineyard

In 1980, founder Richard Hanson planted the eight acres of noble vitis vinifera grapes. By 1987, the wine produced began selling under the Rebec label. Now, a quarter of a century later, sixteen wines are marketed via winery visits, festivals and local restaurant and retail establishments.

We named our vineyard after a medieval stringed instrument, the rebec. A forerunner of the modern violin, the rebec represented our commitment to old-world craftsmanship in winemaking.

The winery was designed and built by Mr. Hanson and his son-in-law Mark Magruder. The building features rich weathered chestnut siding and exposed beams from a 200 year old tobacco barn.

In addition to producing several award-winning wines and being a pioneer in the Virginia wine industry, Rebec is best known for our annual Virginia Wine & Garlic Festival. The festival began in 1991, and has grown into Virginia’s largest agricultural festival. Held each year in October, visitors from across the nation visit our vineyard for a “stinkin’ good time”!

Meet the Winemaker

Svet

In July of 1992, I arrived from Bulgaria on a FFA (Future Farmers of America)exchange program. Before that I finished my Agricultural degree.

Rebec Vineyards and Mountain View is the place I “landed” and made life long friends. This is also, where I had my first experiences with the language and culture. It has been a life journey for me.

I fell in love with Virginia’s beauty and with the help and encouragement from the Hanson’s family, I am living the life in the Virginia wine-country.

We produce small batches of hand crafted European wines and some unique blends.

I love interacting with our visitors and will always take the time to answer your questions.

Cheers!!!
